Why Your Psoriasis Is Flaring Before Winter in Pune
If your psoriasis patches have turned redder, scalier or itchier over the last few weeks, you’re not imagining it. As a dermatologist in Karvenagar, I see this every October and November. Many patients from Kothrud, Deccan and Shivajinagar walk in saying the same thing: “It was fine in the monsoon.”
Why does psoriasis flare as winter approaches?
Psoriasis is an immune-driven skin condition, and several triggers stack up at this time of year:
- Drier air. Humidity drops after the monsoon, and Pune’s cool mornings pull moisture out of the skin. Dry skin cracks and scales more easily.
- Less sunlight. Moderate sun exposure often helps psoriasis, and shorter days mean less of it.
- Festival season stress. Diwali brings disturbed sleep, heavy meals, sweets, alcohol and stress, all known triggers.
- Seasonal infections. Colds, sore throats and viral fevers can set off flares in some people.
- Skipped treatment. Many people stop their medicines when the skin looks better in the monsoon, and the flare returns
Simple tips for psoriasis care in Pune
- Moisturise within 3 minutes of bathing. Use a thick, fragrance-free cream or ointment, not a thin lotion. Apply it twice daily.
- Keep baths short and lukewarm. Hot water strips natural oils. Avoid harsh soaps and scrubbing the patches.
- Get gentle morning sun. A short, sensible exposure on non-peak hours is fine. Never risk sunburn, as burns can trigger new patches.
- Manage stress and sleep. Even 10 minutes of walking or breathing exercises helps.
- Go easy on alcohol and smoking. Both can worsen psoriasis and blunt treatment.
- Don’t pick or scratch scales. Injured skin can develop new plaques.
- Wear soft cotton next to the skin in cooler weather, and avoid itchy wool.
- Don’t stop prescribed treatment without speaking to your dermatologist.
When to see a dermatologist
Please book a consultation if:
- Patches are spreading quickly or covering large areas
- Your scalp, nails, palms or soles are affected
- Joints are painful or stiff in the morning, which can signal psoriatic arthritis
- Over-the-counter creams aren’t working
- Psoriasis is affecting your sleep, work or confidence
Modern treatments, including topicals, phototherapy and systemic medicines when needed, can control psoriasis well. The right plan depends on your skin, your triggers and your lifestyle.
