Most of us dread the big three oh. Welcome to the thirties. A decade of slowly settling into life’s stresses,marriage, work, babies and yes, wrinkles and grey hair.

Our skin starts to show minor signs of ageing in 20’s like fine wrinkles, visible signs in 30’s and prominent signs in the later decades of life.

The best way to fight ageing is from within that is with a healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise. But in today’s time that is not sufficient. We need a lot of external nourishment to keep up with the expectations and beauty standards that we have set up for ourselves.
Many a times in the humdrum of daily life, we forget to pay special attention to our skin care routine, until we wake up in the fifties to a more aged face.
Unfortunately, the face is the first to show signs of ageing.

What are the key factors in ageing of the skin?
1. Exposure to sunlight is the single most improtant factor causing skin ageing and skin damage. In very fair skinned individuals excess exposure may also lead to skin cancers.
2. Use of face muscles of expression- individuals who have very expressive face and excessive use of muscles of facial expression show faster wrinkling.
3. Sudden weight loss
4. Dry skin

What does skin ageing manifest as?
1. Loose, dry and sagging skin on the face
2. Wrinkling specially around eyes, mouth and forehead.
3. Drooping of upper eyelid. Bags under eyes.
4. Sagging of skin of the neck, cheeks
5. Age spots- brown spots on face and hands specially in fair skin individuals.
6. In later age like fifties, skin becomes thinner, waxy and more wrinkled even on the rest of the body.
7. Greying of hair. Slowing of hair growth and thinning

Let us look at some tips to prevent early ageing:
1. Regular use of sunscreen or some kind of physical sunprotection from the early twenties. This goes a long way in preventing skin ageing in later life.
2. Avoid sleeping on one side or on your belly. This squishes the face and causes asymmetrical wrinkling.
3. Avoid holding mobile phone directly against your cheek, ( specially if you talk on the phone for a long time) this heats the skin causes more wrinkling.
4. Wash your face with cold water instead of hot water.
5. Take facials from trained individuals only. Home care routines like gua sha and jade rollers or home exfoliators should be used carefully and after adequate training only.
6. By your thirties, you should have established a good skin care routine which suits you. You should know products and makeup that suits your skin type.

What can your Dermatologist do for anti-ageing?
The Dermatologist, has lot of tools to reverse and slow down ageing.
1. Chemical peels: simple 5 minute procedure which has many uses. Reduces pigmentation, firms up the skin, targets fine wrinkles

2. Microneedling, Dermaroller, MNRF laser, Dermapen, platelet rich plasma therapy-These different techniques all help in building collagen. This gives the skin a good foundation and reduces weinkles. Result is visible after multiple sittings.

3. BOTOX injections: These are given as injections in the face muscles. There are many misconceptions surrounding Botox injections and many women are hesitant to opt for it. It reduces the activity of the muscles it is injected into, smoothens the wrinkles, reduces visible pores and causes tightening of skin. The results of Botox last from 3-6 months. It is a misconception that Botox is very expensive or reserved only for movie stars. Nowadays it is quite affordable, accessible and done by the right and trained doctors gives a natural yet good result. It is a myth that only old women should get botox, the results and visible improvement is best in younger women in whom wrinkles are not very old or set.

4. Fillers : these are natural or synthetic substances injected to fill out wrinkles or scars or even the lower eyelid to reduce dark circles or for lip and smile enhancement.

I want to add a few things about collagen powders as that is a buzz word these days. Collagen is a natural protein in the body in the skin, bone, joints and cartilage. Collagen powders claim to improve wrinkling and skin elasticity. But there are very few studies regarding their efficiency as of now. None of these studies are controlled trials of large groups hence it is difficult to say if it really improves wrinkles and also how long lasting the effects are.
The good quality powders or even tablets prescribed by doctors are expensive and need to be taken for atleast 8 weeks.
